The District 5 Schoolhouse was once one of 15 such schools in Underhill, and it is the only one remaining in public hands.
This schoolhouse is listed on the Vermont Historic Sites and Structures Survey and is eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. District 5 was established in 1811, the oldest school district in Underhill Center. The current building is the third schoolhouse on what is one of the earliest occupied sites in the village.
Action to Preserve & Restore
Fundraising began in 2015 and will continue until the Old Schoolhouse is restored. Total funding required for restoration is approximately $80,000. Although the structure is limited to 3-season use, the space has many benefits to offer Underhill residents as an available community space that may be rented and used for hosting many types of functions and special events.
